As many Nigerians across all strata of life continue to bemoan the death of two prominent human rights activists who devoted a greater part of their lives to fight for a better Nigeria, Messrs Yinka Odumakin and Innocent Chukwuma, Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo (NNII) has paid a condolence visit to the wives of the deceased.
Until his demise, Odumakin who read Political Science in the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) was the spokesman of the Pan socio-cultural Yoruba group, Afenifere while Chukwuma was known for what not a few have described as “his courageous and dedicated activism” over the years.
A strong delegation of NNII visited the homes of the late activists recently where they commiserated with their wives, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin and Mrs. Josephine Chukwuma on the demise of their husbands.
The President General of NNII, Iyom Josephine Anenih in her condolence message enjoined the widows to take heart for the loss of their husbands.
Anenih who was the former Women Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Minister of Women Affairs, commiserated with the families of the late activists.
While delivering the condolence message, Mrs. Ify Akerele prayed that the almighty God will repose the souls of the departed and comfort the bereaved families.
Those who accompanied the President General on the visit include Barrister (Mrs.) Oby Anubi, Barrister (Mrs.) Joy Chiori and Dr. (Mrs.) Felicia Chinwe Mogo.
Others are Ms. Ego Nwokocha, Mrs. Chizoba Anyika and Princess Adaeze Nwankwo. They all expressed their grief over the death of Odumakin and Chukwuma just as they pointed out that with their death, Nigeria has indeed lost two giants of democracy.
Mrs. Okei-Odumakin in her response shared glowing reminiscences of her life with her late husband while informing the delegation that the body will be laid to rest on April 24 2021.
On her part, Mrs. Chukwuma expressed delight over NNII kind gesture as she led the delegation into some of her late husband’s dreams and aspirations for the country and humanity. She promised to share the burial date as soon as it is confirmed by the family.
Anenih assured the wives of the deceased of what she called the “unwavering commitment” of NNII towards partnerships for development and willingness to collaborate in advancing the cause of womankind.
The widows thanked NNII for their support at this critical period in their lives and expressed hope for their eventual meeting with the deceased on the resurrection morning.
