The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has given approval for the establishment of Joemarine Institute of Nautical Studies and Research, Effurum, Delta State.Th
The approval of the institute was contained in a letter by NBTE Executive Secretary, Professor Idris Bugaje and addressed to its proprietor.
The letter dated January 9, 2023 with reference number C/TEB.467/VOLVI/158 also conveyed the NBTE’s interim accreditation for some of its academic programmes and streams for the take-off of the institution.
These include Computer Science, Nautical Science, Marine Transport and Business Studies, Marine Meteorology and Coastal Management in the National Diploma (ND) level.
According to the letter which was sighted by Maritime Bits, the NBTE\s approval is subject to fulfilling to some certain conditions laid out by its authority.
These include not admitting more than the number of approved students and streams as well as strict compliance to regulations and government policies as it affects private monotechnic institutions.
In the same vein, NBTE said: “admission of students into the approved programmes should commence from the 2022/2023 academic session, otherwise the approval to commence the programmes lapses.
“Thereafter, the admission can only be allowed to take place after a fresh resource inspection visitation has been carried at the instance of the school”, it added.
The letter also revealed that the approved programmes will be due for initial accreditation when the first sets of students are in the third or fourth semester of study.
Joemarine Institute of Nautical Studies and Research is an indigenous firm registered in Nigeria with the corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). It commenced business in 1997 with few approved courses by Nigeria’s apex maritime regulatory authority, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). Its mission statement include training, education and the development of what it called an “effective and competent manpower” for the maritime, as well as the oil and gas industries.
