Ever heard your partner say something to you that stung? Some words do not just hurt. They change the way your partner sees themself and the relationship. Now here are some sentences that have no business being in a relationship:

·        You are just someone I am managing: No one wants to feel tolerated in a relationship. Love should make people feel chosen, not endured.

·        You are not my spec: Whether it is said as a joke or during an argument, it quietly tells your partner “I settled for you.” That is not something people easily forget.

·        Your father, your mother: Dragging someone’s parents into an argument rarely solves the issue. Respect should remain, even when emotions are running high.

·        I regret being in a relationship with you: Except you have no plans of coming back to that person because some statements cannot be taken back. Even if you apologize later, the question lingers: “Did you mean it?”

·        You do not know anything: When you say this to someone, it not only attacks their intellectual capacity, but it also affects their ability to express themselves. Correcting someone is one thing. Belittling them is another.

·        How much do you even earn? Money should never become a weapon. Especially against someone you are supposed to build with.

·        What have you ever done for me? If someone has truly done nothing, why are you still with them? And if they have, this sentence dismisses every effort they have made.

·        You are stupid, you are foolish or any other insult: You should be able pass your points across without having to resort to insults. Disagreements happen. Name-calling does not have to.

·        I am only being kind to you: Love should not feel like charity. No one wants to feel like they are receiving affection out of pity.

·        You will never find someone like me: This is not confidence. It is manipulation. A healthy relationship is not sustained by making someone believe they have no better options.

·        You are too sensitive: Sometimes people use this to avoid taking responsibility. Your feelings should not be dismissed simply because they are inconvenient.

·        This is why my ex was better: Constantly comparing your partner to an ex will not allow your relationship to thrive because comparisons rarely motivate; rather, they breed resentment.

·        Who else will tolerate you? This sentence can quietly destroy someone’s confidence. It is designed to make someone feel lucky to be loved instead of worthy of love.

See you next week.
