Looking for something to watch this weekend? Here are five movies I watched this month and highly recommend. Whether you enjoy romance, action, drama, comedy, or suspense, these picks offer a little something for everyone.
· May Day (Apple TV): Caught behind enemy lines in the middle of the cold war, Navy pilot “Assassin” tries to return to the United States of America (USA) with the help of an unlikely friend, Nick, a former KGB agent who surprisingly likes America. Together, they race across hostile territory while evading the Russian agents pursuing them. Will Assassin be able to return to America, and will he be able to obtain asylum status for his Russian friend? Find out in this movie as it explores themes of patriotism, friendship, and sacrifice.
· Married for the Weekend (YouTube): They say sometimes if you love someone, you should be willing to let them go. Demilade and Tomi resolve to keep up appearances for one weekend while in the middle of a divorce so that the news does not affect Tomi’s father’s deteriorating health. Eventually, they both realise that being apart has made them appreciate each other more. They rediscover their love and get back together, this time stronger, more tolerant, and more appreciative of each other.
· Gandhari (Netflix): How far will a mother go to protect her child? Bani’s daughter is kidnapped during a train stop at Joypurra. Using her temporary blindness as a cover, Bani stays behind in town with her husband to master its ways and hunt down the abductors. She uncovers many secrets about Joypurra, her husband, her past life, and the trafficking ring, and soon realises that people are not who they seem to be. This suspense-filled drama shines the spotlight on child trafficking in India and explores themes of motherhood, revenge, and redemption.
· Love in Full Colours (YouTube): Dimma is an administrative assistant with a vibrant and colourful sense of style. She gets into trouble, though, when she catches the eye of a wealthy man who happens to be the love interest of her boss. Between managing her boss’s toxicity and trying to earn money to support her aunty’s ailing health, she and Mr. Larry fall in love. Will their relationship survive the pressure? This movie explores unexpected chemistry, class dynamics, and self-awareness.
· Bowale (YouTube): Sometimes, we judge people even before we know them. This movie emphasises the need for us to know people before we judge them. It follows the life of a young executive who gives ex-convicts, drug addicts, sex workers, and other people whom society would rather discard a second chance. Will it end well or will her gesture of good faith come back to bite her? This emotional drama will leave you reflecting on morality, judgement, and second chances.
See you next week.
