*Ex-Gov Calls for Calm

Following nullification of the election that brought him to office by the state election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has made public his intention to seek redress in court.

To this end, he has instructed his lawyers to appeal the judgment by filling the necessary papers.

This is coming on the heels of the uneasy calm in the state capital, Yenagoa over the Monday judgment that has sent tongues wagging among some residents.

A statement by the governor’s Acting Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Daniel Alabrah, said that Diri spoke shortly after the tribunal ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wrongly excluded the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP) governorship candidate from the November 16, 2019 election.

The governor maintained that he had implicit confidence in the judiciary that he would triumph in the end.

“We trust in the judiciary and we are appealing the judgement. With God on our side, we will get justice. This is a court of first instance and I have instructed our lawyers to file an appeal. We have a right of appeal even up to the Supreme Court”, he said.

The governor urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his supporters not to panic and to continue to remain calm and law-abiding.

In a related development, Diri’s predecessor, Chief Seriake Henry Dickson, has urged Bayelsans not to be perturbed by the judgment of the tribunal which annulled the state governorship election.

He described the judgment as a temporary setback which did not in law affect the status quo until appeal processes were exhausted.

Dickson in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Fidelis Soriwei said that the PDP and the government would appeal the judgment.

The former governor stressed that there was no vacancy in the Bayelsa Government House as Diri remains governor until a final decision on the issue was reached at the supreme court.

He enjoined Bayelsans to go about their lawful duties without any disturbance because of the judgment on the suit filed by the ANDP against its purported exclusion in the election by INEC.

His words: “I urge Bayelsans to remain calm. They shouldn’t misinterpret what took place at the tribunal today. The judgment is a temporary setback which does not have any effect on the status quo until all processes of appeal are exhausted.

“There is no vacancy in the Bayelsa Government House. Diri remains governor until the Supreme Court decides. Of course what this means is that the PDP will appeal this decision.”
