Nigeria’s most modern and deepest sea port, Lekki Port has recorded another milestone since it started operations.
The port has successfully berthed the largest container vessel to ever berth in Nigeria, MAERSK EDIRNE. It is a container ship with a length overall (LOA) of 366 meters and a width of 48 meters.
Maritime Bits checks revealed that it is a 13,092 TEUs vessel which docked at Lekki Port at 14.42 hours on January 21, 2024.
It is one of 13 large container vessels which form the new CMA CGM WAX service that will operate along key locations including Xiamen, Qingdao, Shanghai, Singapore, Lekki Port, and Abidjan.
According to the management of the seaport, this marks a pivotal moment in the maritime history as it proudly joins the esteemed CMA CGM West Africa express service as the only port in Nigeria that is in this impressive port rotation. This is a testament to Lekki Port’s capability to accommodate large container vessels, solidifying its position as a key player in global trade.
It added that this is a great win for Nigeria and the beginning of a new era of maritime excellence just as it expressed gratitude to the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for its team of pilots and other professionals who steered the vessel safely to berth.
It also expressed optimism that more vessels will call at the port in the days ahead. According to it, this include the magnificent CMA CGM SCANDOLA, an LNG powered vessel with a carrying capacity of 14,000 TEUs.
