Apparently pleased with the strides the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Dr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi have made since his appointment, President Bola Tinubu has approved an extension of his tenure for the second time.
Foreclosing any further elongation of Adeniyi’s tenure, Tinubu made it abundantly clear that the current extension is the final one he would consider for the Customs boss.
Maritime Bits had reported that Tinubu had last year granted an initial six-month tenure extension to the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) which ought to elapse on August 1, 2026.
The fresh extension of Adeniyi’s tenure by Tinubu was contained in a statement dated June 19, 2026 and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
The statement which was made available to Maritime Bits, stated that the current six-month extension will expire in February 2027.
Apparently giving reasons for Adeniyi’s extension, the statement explained that the extension will enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window (NSW) and ensure an orderly succession in the service.
“During the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years,” the statement reads in part:
It is on record that the CGC joined NCS after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State in the late 80s.
Adeniyi rose through the ranks becoming Deputy Comptroller (DC) in 2012 and Comptroller in 2017.
In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023. He held this position before his appointment as the CGC in June 2023 by Tinubu.
