The other day, someone expressed her opinion on why a female should not be president of Nigeria. She did not quite finish her point before I and someone else shut her down citing all the very important reasons women should in fact aspire to the office of president.
In retrospect, however, I became concerned not by her opinion but by the fact that I wrongly assumed that as a woman she will certainly want to see another woman attain the highest political position in the country.
While women have evolved over the years, thanks to the hard work of various women movements all around the world, we must understand that equality might not mean the same for everyone. That you believe women can do better in positions men occupy, does not automatically cancel those who just want the best person for the job to get it regardless of gender.
In essence, you must know for yourself why you subscribe to an idea, be it on the subject of submission, independence, women supporting women and other social constructs rather than joining the bandwagon.
I implore you today to think objectively, question the status quo and trust your voice because it is yours.

Movies of the Week
· Harriet (Netflix): Harriet Tubman managed to escape slavery, but when she sought to also rescue her family, her idea was shut down. This biographical drama follows the story of a woman who never took no for an answer. She was brave, determined and trusted in God completely.
· Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (Prime Video): Another biographical film that chronicles the life of a woman who achieved many firsts but also went on to fight against oppression. The movie explores themes of bravery, courage and heroism.
