The pioneer Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mrs. Mfon Ekong Usoro has written a book on international trade and carriage of goods by sea.
The book titled “International Trade and Carriage of Goods by Sea: Texts, Cases, and Materials” offers what the author called “a comprehensive analysis” of legal, commercial and operational aspects of international trade and the carriage of goods by sea from both Nigerian and global perspectives.
According to Usoro who is also the former Secretary General, Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central Africa Sub-regions otherwise called Abuja MoU, the book is a valuable resource for individuals involved in the cross-border trade and international transportation of goods ecosystem, including bankers, lawyers, judges, exporters, importers, shipping companies, researchers, and academics.
Apparently pleased with the development, some notable Nigerians including stakeholders in the maritime industry and beyond have made some comments on the book which will be unveiled in a yet to be stated date.
A statement made by Usoro and available to Maritime Bits quoted the Chairman, Access Holdings Plc, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede saying that the book is an indispensable guide in the area of its focus.
His words: “With a focus on the international sale and transportation of goods, this comprehensive guide is an indispensable resource for professionals seeking to understand and navigate the complexities of this specialized field.”
On her part, the President, Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA), Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN, said: “This book is, in part, the culmination of her extensive experience and knowledge, offering a comprehensive and insightful guide that navigates the complex landscape of international trade and the carriage of goods by sea. With its meticulous analysis and lucid language garnished with a plethora of Nigerian cases, this work is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in international trade, from practitioners and academics to students and shipping professionals.”
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun also commented on the book even as she poured encomiums on the author.
Her words: “The comprehensiveness of this work is a clear manifestation of the knowledge and experience of the author, Mfon Ekong Usoro, a shipping lawyer and maritime administrator with many years of practice in the maritime sector”.
According to the CJN, having delivered papers at numerous domestic and international conferences, she knows where the shoe pinches. The book reflects her deep understanding of the subject and provides a most valuable resource for judicial officers, legal practitioners and other stakeholders interested in this specialized area of law.
A lawyer by profession, Usoro who is presently the Managing Partner, Paul Usoro and Company remains the first ever female Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to be appointed by the Federal Government to head NIMASA.
