To show up in the world, we sometimes feel we have to shrink some aspects of our lives. These include the way we talk, laugh or even personal style. We often do this so that we can be accepted, taken seriously or fit in. We are told that to get ahead in life, we can only present our curated version – the filtered look, glammed up face, well-rehearsed speech, perfect grades and a lifestyle routine that screams perfection. Sometimes, you would rather wear your hair in an afro bun, eat amala from the buka down your street and wear comfortable sweatpants.
Authenticity is the quality of being genuine or real. To be authentic as a person means to show up and be real. It is a choice to stay true to yourself, values and beliefs.
Do not get me wrong. Some situations do not allow you to just show up as you are especially in the workplace, but you do not have to lose yourself in the process of getting what you want. Sometimes, you even shrink your personality just to please others. They fill your head with tales of how you have to be a certain way for you to achieve anything.
Authenticity is not only limited to outward appearance, but it also includes standing up for yourself, stating when you are not comfortable with a process, refusing to participate in what is not right to you, recognizing your mistakes and choosing to do better. It is also not an excuse to behave badly or treat others poorly.
Check yourself today. Are you really who you say you are? Are you staying true to your values? Decide to be authentic because you cannot do life on other people’s terms.
See you next week.
