Nigeria’s apex maritime regulatory authority, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has said it is monitoring an oil spill which occurred at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny Island, Rivers State.
The spill which occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024 was said to have resulted from a ruptured pipeline.
The agency in a statement signed by its Assistant Director, Public Relations, Mr. Edward Osagie said SPDC has promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deployed containment booms to protect the neighboring communities.
According to the statement which was made available to Maritime Bits at the weekend, although the spill has reached the shoreline, NIMASA is actively monitoring the situation from an emergency operations center. The agency is collaborating with SPDC and other relevant stakeholders to assess the extent of the spill and determine necessary follow-up actions.
NIMASA which has Dr. Dayo Mobereola as its Director General, enjoined members of the public to remain calm as the agency is committed to mitigating the impact of the spill and restore affected areas.
