The National Assembly has reiterated its readiness to quicken the much awaited renewal of the concession agreement to the concessionaires of the nation’s seaports.
The upper chamber of the National Assembly dropped the hint when some of its members visited the nation’s seaports situated in Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, Lagos as part of their oversight functions.
The visit which was carried out under the auspices of the Senate Committee on Privatisation led by its Chairman, Senator Sunday Marshall Katung was meant for the legislators to monitor the performances of concessioned firms.
Speaking when he was at the premises of Ports and Cargo terminal in Lagos, Katung expressed the committee’s readiness to facilitate a faster renewal of the concessionaire’s concession agreement.
According to the legislator, the purpose of the committee visit to Ports and Cargo terminal was to understand the issues around port terminal operations by the concessionaires and to proffer solutions to identified challenges for the maritime sector to contribute substantially to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
A statement signed by the Corporate Communications Officer of Sifax Group, Mr. Olatunde Adewola and made available to Maritime Bits quoted Katung promising that the committee would liaise with all relevant government agencies connected with the concession renewal for quicker resolution.
“The meeting also highlighted broader industry challenges and opportunities, such as implementing single-window cargo clearance systems and developing inland ports to ease congestion in Lagos terminals”, the statement added.
