The Assistant General Manager (AGM), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Sylvester Othuke Egede who was declared the “Most Outstanding Port Manager 2024” by Maritime Media Limited producers of Shipping World magazine and organizers of the 27th edition of the Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA) has dedicated his award to the Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho.
At the investiture ceremony at the 2025 edition of MIMA at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos recently, Egede in his acceptance speech dedicated the award to the NPA helmsman.
Egede whose acceptance speech was read on his behalf by multiple award winning journalist and Publisher, Maritime Bits, Rev. John Iwori due to his official engagements thanked God for giving him the capacity, competence and courage to perform the task bestowed upon him by the management of NPA.
Continuing, he said: “My sincere thanks goes to the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho who is also an awardee. I dedicate this award to God almighty, my Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar. Dantsoho, the staff of Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos and my family and friends. I thank the organizers of this award especially the godfather, Elder Asu Beks for honouring me on this auspicious occasion. Thank you all and God bless.”
Egede who was hitherto the Port Manager (PM), Tin Can Island Port (TCIP) is presently AGM, Managing Director’s Office, NPA Headquarters, Marina, Lagos.
He was given the award for the strides he made during his tenure as the PM, TCIP, especially in the clearing of the gridlock and debris that hindered access to Nigeria’s second busiest port which has drastically reduced cargo dwell time (CDT) for over a decade, a feat that was attested by many port users.
He was said to have attained the feat in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders in the maritime sector of the economy.
Already, there are accolades from far and near for Egede as not a few stakeholders in the maritime industry and beyond have hailed him for clinching the award.
The stakeholders include the management and staff of Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics base (LADOL), GM Shipping, Marvelous Maritime Services Limited, Uyoyo Maritime Energy Limited, Ocean and Port Marine Logistics Limited, Tenzik Energy, Eko Support Services Limited, and Peak Shipping Agency Limited.
Among other things, they affirmed Egede’s relentless ability to search for solutions to problems and find innovative ways to improve the maritime sector of the economy.
They also attested to what they described as “his hard work and perseverance” just as they stated that the award was not only inspirational but well deserve.
