The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah has hailed the Maritime Editor of the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper, Mr. Tola Adenubi for clinching the Maritime Reporter of the Year award at the 2025 Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA) which took place recently at Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

Akutah who stated this in his office when he played host to Adenubi in his office in Apapa, Lagos called for more professionalism in maritime reportage.

His words: “This award is one of the little ways of saying thank you to people who have done well. Who have excelled in their field of journalism. You know, today, everyone is becoming a journalist because of social media platforms that have given them opportunities to write and critique.

“But the professional journalists who follow up stories and make sure that they dig into the truthfulness of what they are writing will always be there to excel. Irrespective of the prevalence of social media writers today, some people will always want to go with the traditional media rather than the social media practitioners because of the professionalism that comes with traditional media”.

The NSC helmsman enjoined journalists to be aware that whatever story they want to come up with, they should remember that the story can damage someone and can also make someone.

Continuing, he said: “So always try to balance your story so that at the end of the day, the people will always see the truth in what you are reporting. Journalism should not just be about writing anything just for the purpose of writing. Professional journalists have to be concerned about what comes out as news to the public because it is also about the writer’s identity.”

Maritime Bits checks revealed that Adenubi who is presently an Assistant Business Editor with Nigerian Tribune Newspaper founded by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo decades ago has been covering the maritime sector of the economy with indebt stories and analysis that have earned him accolades from industry stakeholders.
