*Receives NUJ Award
The Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara has extolled the virtues of the late Sardauna of Sokoto and premier of the defunct Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello.
The traditional ruler stated this while speaking as a royal father at the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council in commemoration of the late Sardauna of Sokoto who was assassinated 60 years ago by soldiers in Kaduna during the 1966 military coup.
The royal father who retired as a Comptroller in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and was at various times, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Eastern Marine Commands, enjoined leaders at all levels across the country to build upon his legacy for overall development of the nation.
According to him, the name Sir Ahmadu Bello has continued to dominate both historical and contemporary discourse in democratic leadership, governance and public service sixty years after his assassination.
He commended the efforts of NUJ, Katsina State Council for finding the day worthy of reference and for organizing series of events and lectures in the honour of the late premier and urge them to make it an annual event.
The Kanwa Katsina averred that the visionary leadership and foresight of the late Sardauna of Sokoto laid a foundation for the socio-economic development in northern Nigeria particularly through the establishment of institutions of learning like the famous Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State where he attended and graduated in 1981 and other infrastructures that are still in use till now.
Also speaking, the guest speaker who is a lecturer at Bayero University, Kano, Dr. Bala Abdullahi Mohamed recalled that Sir Ahmadu Bello succeeded in forging unity among the various ethnic tribes in the defunct Northern region and executed various projects and programmes that brought development in the region.
The highpoint of the event which attracted dignitaries from all walks of life was the presentation of an award to the Kanwan Katsina, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara in his continued support of NUJ activities in the state.
Those who attended the event include the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe who delivered a keynote address extolling the virtues of the late premier even as he called for his emulation by present leaders.
Meanwhile, the Kanwa Katsina, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara has felicitated with the NUJ Chairman Katsina State Council, Comrade Tukur Hassan Dan Ali on his appointment as a Permanent Secretary in the Katsina State civil service.
Apparently happy with the development, the royal father described Ali’s elevation as a meritorious one even as he enjoined him to work assiduously for the development of the state.
While wishing him well in his new role, he prayed God to guide him in the discharge of his statutory roles and responsibilities.
