The Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has changed the date and venue of its much awaited annual maritime lecture series tagged MAMAL 2025.
Previously scheduled to hold on August 28, 2025, at the Eko Hotels and Suites, MAMAL 2025 has now been rescheduled to hold on August 27, 2025 at Four Point by Sheraton Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event with the theme “Addressing the Burden of War Risk Insurance on Nigerian Maritime Trade,” will focus on the persistent imposition of Extra War Risk Insurance (EWRI) premiums on vessels operating in Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).
A statement issued by MARAN and made available to Maritime Bits said the lecture will host strategic dialogues on maritime security, the impact of global shipping insurance practices, and the way forward for stakeholders in the fishing, shipping, and broader maritime sectors.
According to MARAN, stakeholders’ participation in the forthcoming annual lecture is considered critical and timely to help shape actionable outcomes and reinforce industry advocacy for safer waters and fairer trade conditions.
Maritime Bits checks revealed that MAMAL 2025 is expected to bring together no fewer than 500 industry participants, including ship owners, terminal operators, insurers, legal practitioners, maritime regulators, naval representatives, and diplomats.
These include the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, Tantita Security Services Limited, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, and the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN).
Others are Lagos base maritime lawyers, Mrs. Funke Agbor, SAN and Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN who is expected to deliver the keynote address; terminal operators and the Chief Executive Officer of Le Look Nigeria Limited, Chief (Mrs.) Chinwe Ezenwa.
The following associations are also expected to participate in MAMAL 2025. They are the Nigerian Trawler Owners Association (NITOA), African Ship Owners Association (ASA), Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), and the Nigerian Ship Owners Association (NISA).
Already, the former Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Barrister Temisan Omatseye has been confirmed as one of the speakers in the event just as top officials of NIMASA, Nigerian Navy, and international maritime bodies.
MARAN President, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere explained that MAMAL 2025 aims to thoroughly examine the perceived threats, realities, and profound implications of persistent Extra War Risk Insurance (EWRI) on Nigeria’s maritime trade and the wider GoG.
Giving an insight into the occasion, Bivbere stated that the highly anticipated lecture has consistently served as a crucial rallying point for all maritime stakeholders due to the fact that MARAN is a respected voice in the maritime sector of the economy.
According to him, MAMAL 2025 will also explore issues leading to the classification of Nigeria’s territorial waters as high-risk zones, roles of classification societies like the Lloyds of London, the roles of core stakeholders like NIMASA, Nigerian Navy and other maritime and security operators.
